「日本人デザイナーが世界で活躍できる方法」を考えて下さい。How can Japanese designers flourish globally?

この街が出来たら、是非事務所を構えたいと思います。
この提案に追加してこの街にいけば受けられるサービスや、デザインに関わる人がシェアできるような図書館やミュージアムなどの設備ができると良いですね。
デザイナーの産地ブランドのようなイメージで、この街からたくさん良いデザイナーが出てきて、街自体がブランドになると楽しいと思います。

If a town like this were developed, I would love to open an office here. To add to this idea, services unique to this town and facilities such as libraries and museums that people involved in design could share would be nice too. If many talented designers emerge from this town, the town itself could become like a brand. That would be fun.

素材学というのは面白いアイディアだと思います。そこに日本人ならではの編集力を加え、例えば日本の素材でなくても日本にくることによって日本人にしか出来ない素材を開発するという概念的な素材学が学べると更に可能性が広がりますね。

Material studies is an interesting idea. We could add the unique Japanese ability to adapt. For example, something that is not necessarily a Japanese material could be brought here and developed in a way unique to the Japanese. Offering conceptual material studies like this would further expand possibilities.

先輩方の話を聞くのも重要なことだと思います。日本人として、そして仕事に対して誇りをもつということも重要です。また、それぞれの町工場や職人の独特な技術を掛け合わせ、それらを違う角度から見ることができるような議論が出来る場や、それらを編集することが出来る人が参加することにより、思いもつかなかったような新しいアイディアが生まれる可能性がありますね。

I feel it’s important to pay attention to what mentors have to say. It’s crucial to have pride as a Japanese national and also in your work. If we combine the unique techniques of small factories and artisans, create a venue to discuss those techniques to view them from different perspectives, and have participants who could interpret that, we might be able to generate some completely new ideas.

コンペなどで不採用になったものは、世間の目に触れられないままになるのが常ですが、そのコンペでは一番でなくても、すばらしいアイディアが眠っていることがあるはずです。
こういう博覧会があったら、敗者復活戦のように、そこから新しいアイディアが生まれる可能性があると思います。あとは、昔は失敗だと思われたが今の技術では可能になっていることもあるはず。時空を超えた失敗博覧会のアーカイブも見てみたいですね。

It’s standard for things that don’t win competitions to get buried and never see the light of day. But there are sure to be dormant ideas that are superb even if they didn’t win first place in a competition. With an expo like this, there’s potential to create new ideas, like a consolation match. There are probably also ideas that were thought to be failures at the time but are feasible today with current technology. I’d be interested to see an archive of failure expos that go beyond space and time.

日本の教育だと、団体行動と協調性に重きを置く教育が主流だと思いますが、それぞれの趣味を授業にするということは、好きな物を見つけることだと思います。その授業の中では堂々と趣味として胸を張れるような場があることにより、早期段階での自分の趣向や適正の発見の可能性が広がり、将来の道につながっていく可能性が高くなると思います。こういうことを公に認めていく、許容していく教育はすごく重要に感じます。

Japan’s education predominantly places emphasis on group activity and cooperation. To make individual hobbies into a class would mean discovering what you like. If students have an arena where they can proudly do what they like as a hobby in class, it would be easier to discover their tastes and capabilities at an early stage, which might link to their future. I feel it’s really important that education be openly tolerant of things like this.

大変刺激的なアイディアですね。我々デザイナーは常に社会と寄り添い、ビジネスと密接に関わりながら活動しています。デザインやアートは、お金と切り離すことがクリーンであるというイメージを与えられがちですが、素晴らしいアイディアはビジネスに結びついていくということを最もリアルに知ることができ良いアイディアです。ここでの評価は、そのままデザイナーの将来の自信になると思います。

This is a very stimulating idea. We designers are always working within the boundaries of society and closely with business. People tend to think that separating design and art from business would make them untainted, but this idea is good because it communicates best the reality that superb ideas link to business. Being recognized here would likely give a designer confidence for the future.

こんな塾があったら、僕も子供を通わせたいと思います。ピアノ塾、バレエ教室などむしろ極端と思われるような塾が存在するのに、我々の生活に密接に関わるデザイナーを目指す塾がないのはむしろ不思議な気さえします。なにも難しいことを教えるのではなく、コンセプトやアイディア、物の見方を教えるような塾があったら人生に対してのデザインという意味でも大きなスタートになるのではないでしょうか。

If there were a design school like this, I would want my kids to go there. There are piano and ballet classes, which are extreme if you think about it. So it’s almost strange that there aren’t schools for aspiring designers because design is so relevant to our everyday lives. There’s no need to teach complicated things; if a school taught about concepts, ideas, and how to look at things, I think this would be a significant start in terms of designing life also.

デザイン／アートに特化した学校、コミュニケーション方法の教育、ビジネスや海外とのコネクションを斡旋するような機構などを強化している県があったら素晴らしいと思います。曖昧なことが評価の軸となるデザインと概念ですが、優秀なクリエイターを育てるという実績において大きな評価を世界中から浴びることになるでしょう。世界で活躍できる方法は、出て行くだけでなく、知ってもらうということも一つの方法だと思います。

It would be great if there were a prefecture that supported design/art specialty schools, communication method education, and institutions that mediated connections with business and overseas. Evaluation is intrinsically ambiguous for design and concepts, but cultivating competent creators is sure to bring international acclaim. While stepping outside of Japan is one way to succeed in the world, another way is to spread recognition.
